Function VS Portability - air compressors
Posted by xyz on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 7:35 AM

Hi, I live in Australia and I've been studying sculpture at uni for 5 years now.

I've recently been interested in miniature figure making and how I could incorporate that into my art making.

Fine scale model is an entirely new field of interest for me and I'd be really grateful if you guys can help me out with some questions that I have!

I plan on making miniature figures and paint them and I would like to try out airbrushing for more delicate paint application.

The following dot points are my current circumstance:

  • I do not have driver's licence or a car and I method of transportation is bus
  • I live in a share house and a housemate living downstairs have a year old baby who's quite sensitive when it comes to noise :S
  • I have my own little studio space and locker/s when I go into the sculpture workshop at uni
  • The workshop is open during the day and there has been numerous incidents of theft - ranging from petty to expensive items - so all the valuable items need to be stored in my locker when not in use or I'll need to take it home with me.
I also don't like it when other students decide to 'borrow' things without asking and they usually go AWOL, MIA, or come back dirty :(
  • I am also interested in buying air rotary tools to plug onto the compressor - I use range of materials from wood to aluminium depending on my concept and if I invest in a compressor, I think it'd be great to be able to utilise it to its fullest potential

As you can see size, portability, power, and noise is a big factor to consider for me and I'm really lost!

so,

  1. noise itself isn't too much of a problem at the moment since I won't do any making at home but I would prefer it if it's not too noisy. I might bring it back home during the teaching breaks and stuff so I don't want it to be too noisy.
  2.  as a bus rider and a student in an environment where some people can be inconsiderate, size and portability is a huge issue. I'll need to fit in a two-door locker which I'd say is about 35-45 cm deep, and have reasonable weight to be lifted/carried around by female.
  3. Depending on price range, if I can, I would like the compressor to have enough power to operate air rotary tools such as grinder or polisher. I have absolutely no idea of what kind of power i'll need to operate them and if anyone does, please enlighten me! If this is going to make it too expensive or make the compressor large and heavy, I'll just have to consider purchasing dental handpiece.

I'm thinking about a price range of $150~$200 AUD, and maximum around $300 AUD for a compressor.

So between function/quality and portability, what do you guys reckon is better if I have to make a comprise between those two?

please recommend me a compressor that you think is good for me! :) I really really need help!!

For the sake of ease of transport, I recommend the mail-order route.

As for a nice quiet portible model, I recommend you try either the 1/8 or 1/5 HP model form Harbor Freight Tool Co.:

They both come for under $100 USD, and the 1/5 HP model has an airbrush with it.
