"How To" - Airbrushing over a chrome finish??

Thanks everyone!  I appreciate the suggestions.

I prime with Krylon primer. It is agressive enough to stick to the chrome (usually, actually aluminum) okay.

I'm guessing you want to add some anti-glare panels or similar to the chromed plane?

If so, then you will have to 'key' the chrome by either using very fine sanding stick or spraying with automotive primer, preferably in a colour close to the finish you want.

Remember to sand off any chrome from the mating surfaces & you will then be able to use normal liquid cement.

If you don't want the chrome, then soaking in mild bleach, as above, to remove it is good.

Bleach will remove the chrome plating.  Soak the parts in a bleach and water solution overnight, then brush it off with an old toothbrush.

Be sure to wash the parts ( easiest if they're still on the sprue ) in the usual mild solution with dish detergent before the soak in the bleach.  The stuff they use to make the parts separate from the mold can keep the bleach from working.

I'm just guessing about how much water/bleach.  I think straight bleach might be too strong.  So you may have to experiment a bit.

But actually, chrome plated kits are meant to be built that way and not painted over or stripped.

The entire model is chrome plated.  How do I remove without damaging the plastic?

After a few attempts to paint over chrome resulted in the paint not staying on, I decided to get rid of chrome plating whenever possible.

Do you mean chrome plated parts? I'd just strip the chrome myself if thats the case.
