This is in AUD currency if this makes a difference of the price. Everything in tasmania is expensive. The average price for a 1:48 model is $30. I scored a tamiya 1:48 zero a few months ago for $25.

My LHS still supply's Humbrol acrylics and enamels - $3.20 each

Dang red baron, that's a bit pricey. My LHS which sells pretty much everything at MSRP, has the Humbrol line for $1.99 per tinlet.

Ive used to only use humbrol acrylics, but I got some tamiya acrylics. The tamiya ones don't clog the airbrush up as much as humbrol's but that's probably due to user error. Humbrol's need to be thinned more

I have been dreaming of such a find at any LHS near me...Sad I dont know why anybody's paints are no longer made to the same quality at those old Humbrols but it is a sad day for all of us indeed.

I agree Andrew, the tins do take some getting used to. The pigment content is so high that you can thin it 50/50 and still get good coverage. This paint is at least 25 years old and it beats Model Master by a mile. Why can't they make enamel paint this good anymore? The world wonders. Anyways, best modeling deal that I've made in a long time.

Congrats on the deal. Theres only one reason I prefer acrylics over humbrol and thats because I'm not single anymore (the smell vs wife/kids). I dont care for the tins but I cope with them.

You may be interested to know that the Humbrol Authentic range was discontinued about 10 years or so ago. The "old school" Humbrols were some of the best and brush-painted very nicely.

I went by and picked them up after work today. Good Lord!!! This is alot of paint! The owner told me that he started carrying them in the late 70's and took them off the shelf in the mid 90's. They just didn't sell that well. He thought that it was because of the little cans they come in. He boxed them up, put them in the back room and forgot about them.

Looks like I got the complete RAF, USAF, and Luftwaffe lines in multiples. Some Japanese, Russian, USN, Railroad Colors and assorted metals. Opened a can of HG1 Schwarzgrun 70. It took about 5 minutes to stir up because the pigments had settled to the bottom. This paint airbrushed beautifully, but it excels at hand brushing. The pigment load is insane. It has a smooth dead flat finish that covers in one coat and dries to the touch in a little over 1 hour. Model Master is not even in the same league as this stuff. I have to say that this is the best representation of RLM 70 that I have ever seen in a model paint. It truly is authentic.

My wife thinks the little paint cans are "cute". Women! Don't you just love 'em. LOL!

Thanks for the advice, guys.

Exactly.... they had some discontinued colors (Track Color, Brown Bess, French Artillery Green, etc.) that I would commit specific acts of  serious violence in order to obtain them if I knew where they could be found. The original black tin paint line was extensive and superb.

If I lived near you and knew where that LHS was, I'd race you there. Wink That's a great deal  IF  you can use the colors. If not, it's still a great deal and you can always use the colors you don't use to barter with. I've used them for a long time and never had a problem with them.

I LOVE Humbrol paints... my absolute favorite, bar none. And their color selection was second to none. Once you get used to their tins and stirring thoroughly prior to usage, you would not be disappointed in them. I find them superior to Model Master for Handbrushing and Airbrushing. I dont know if you could use all 487 tins (that sounds like a lifetime supply), but with MM going for over $3.50 a bottle, it sure is more cost efficient. You'd be getting them for less that $.50 a tin. A good deal in my book if you have the cash for it.

Considering they are $2.00 plus a can...I think that's not a bad idea if it's colors you are most likely to use.

Well, I paint 100% with Acrylics. Nah!, let's make it 99.99% cuz the other day I had to get a Bronze/Green #75 for my 1/48 Avenger. It did worked as advertised and mentioned by many modellers especially from the other side of the pond. I was just not prepared for the usual drying time from enamels and to slap my face, next shelf had Vallejo 098.

Based on the many articles I read from UK publications, it is a good paint. If all those 487 tinlets are colors you might use in your builds, then IMHO are worth the $157. I would bargain with them down to $125 but that's me.

Humbrol Authentic Colours?
Posted by Lacquer Head on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 11:12 AM

My LHS is going out of business. Yes another one bites the dust. He has 487 cans of Humbrol Authentic Colours paint for $157.00. I use Model Master paint. Is this Humbrol paint any good? Is $157.00 too much to pay for this paint? Thanks.
