Clogged spray can
Posted by high and the mighty on Saturday, November 19, 2011 8:26 AM

As I tried to spray OD from a spray can onto a P38, the can sputtered then died--with a nearly full amount of paint in it. I tried digging out any clogged paint with a wire reamed into the nozzle, then soaked the thing in paint thinner, which looked to make it clean as a whistle.  But, no whistle.  Any advice before I go out and buy another can?

Pull the nozzle off of another can and use it after you purge the color from the "borrowed" nozzle...I do this with the Testors small cans all of the time...

There are two places to get a clog- in the valve in the top of the can, and in the spray head.  If the clog is in the valve, the can is shot.  The only hope is to decant it and use it in an airbrush or with a regular brush.

In addition to the "turn it upside down and spray until paint stops" cleaning, you must put the cap back in place.  In some new spray cans you do not even turn the can inverted and spray.  The cap fits so tightly that is the main protection against drying in valve or spray head.  There is an inner cap portion. If that gets damaged you need to find an old cap and use that to protect against drying.
