need help finding usn deck blue
Posted by jknuerr on Thursday, November 24, 2011 10:59 AM

I can't  seem to find USN deck blue paint here in Georgia. Does anyone know of a domestic manufacturer still making it, or does anyone have any suggestions of what colors I can mix to replicate it? I prefer enamels.

Thanks

What do you mean by "deck blue"?

Most all the (exterior) decks I ever trod were dark grey with non-skid mixed in.  Interior decks were all coated with a flowable material that came in different colors & textures that depended on the space.  Berthing areas were usually a green tint, so were mess decks.  Office spaces usually had light blueish greyish tints.  Some machinery spaces had reddish deck.

Deck Blue was a WWII era color used on the decks of USN warships in WWII. Polly Scale makes the color and so does White Ensign. Polly Scale is the only domestic line with that color.

here are some leads for you to run down

WEM ColourCoats have a 20-B Deck Blue

http://www.shipcamouflage.com/index.htm (also one of the sources of the color cards)

http://nautilusmodels.com/ (James is somewhat local to you, there is a map link on his site)

http://www.midtennhobbies.com/ (Jack is also a US dealer for LifeColor Acrylics, which have a ship range)

http://www.spruebrothers.com/ (another source for the LifeColors)

also, back in the dark ages, we used to use FS 35042 Flat Sea Blue as our 20-B, before the paint chip cards and specialty paints came out

hope this helps

I've heard that Tamiya XF-50 Field Blue is a good replacement for deck blue.

Where in Georgia are you located?   Check AAA Hobbies in Marietta.  They stock White Ensign's Colurcoat paints.

Another option is Freetime Hobbies retail store (they run an online shop too).  Freetime is located in Blue Ridge, GA.    About an hour due north of Atlanta

MidTennessee and Freetime are both great sources; very reliable.

So is Warship Hobbies:

It appears they have deck blue in stock.
