Model Master Metalizer question.
Posted by frankfinescale on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 8:44 PM

Hello everyone.  I'm new to modeling and would like to give my next model a metallic finish.  Since I don't have an airbrush (yet), I'm gonna go with Model Master Buffing Metallizer in the spray can.

The January issue of FSM had a great article of metallic finishes, but it basically focussed on Alclad (again, I don't have an airbrush).  It did mention Model Master Buffing Metalizer, but didn't go into the best technique for application from the spray can.

I'd like to prep my model with a primer coat, then a glossy paint coat (for depth and color variation), THEN the Metallizer and Metallizer Sealer.  However, they seem to suggest that Model Master Metallizer goes best over bare plastic.  Can I still put my primer and base coats and get a good metallic finish?  Will the metallic finish be strong enough to mask over, or will the finish peel away?

Any expertize would be appreciated.

Hi Frank,I've used several times MM metalizer and I go in two ways:for a not too bright result I prime with tamiya primer (the super fine, white),while if you need a very bright surface you'ld prime with a glossy black.Anyway the surfaces must be perfect and off of any scrath or fingerprints. The primer helps a lot.To mask use a very low tac tape....ONLY AFTER sealing the metalizer..... Study the better way to mask  as less as possible...........I hope to be usefull.....Ciao Enrico.

P.S.A good method to achive different shade of metal is to primer in different way same panels.........and then spray only one kind of metalizer that will react over the different primers with differents shades,to prime you can use :white, light grey, black, and gloss black. So doing you can mask less...................

Model master metallizer does not mask well with tape,if you must use post-its or para-film

Thanks, that's good advice.  I'll use a combination of varied primer colors and different buffing techniques to get different shades of metal!
