I finished up a club project by making a basic paint station for beginners. I wanted to keep it small, versatile, vertically short (less reach between the paint and model), and somewhat effective toward paint spills. The station will hold a jar of thinner (the small jelly jars), Tenax, and just about any size paint bottle, including the small square testors bottles - a rare example of when a square peg can actually fit and work in a round hole - ha. It also has side holders for storing toothpicks and drying two brushes. I thought the small front tray might be used as a palette or brush cleaning. I tried to used the wood space around the paint holders for things like this as opposed to just cutting the extra off.
Materials cost is next to nothing. I paid for the bottom sheet of wood (as opposed to thin cardboard which wouldn't hold up to liquids) and some more wood glue (you could use white glue too). I used some scrap wood, toothpicks, and kabab sticks for the rest of the materials.
