Some Aztek Help Needed
Posted by Vincent Price on Monday, January 2, 2012 4:25 PM

Hi everybody,

I own an Aztek airbrush and am pretty happy with it.

Only, often while using the tan (30 mm) and grey (40mm) sprayheads, the painting goes well the first minutes and then competely stops. I use Vallejo acrylics which I spray at about 15 to 30 psi. The paint is  sufficiently thinned down by using water and the sprayheads are thoroughly cleaned after use. What am I doing wrong?

Secondly, sometimes when cleaning the airbrush with water, the Aztek blows paint back in the jar instead of the other way around. Can someone please tell me what seems to be the problem here?

Thanks in advance for helping me out. :-)

Sounds like the paint is clogging the needle. I see this a lot with acrylics. Try taking the needle out and soaking it in cleaner. You may be spraying your paint too thick. I thin my acrylics about 60% thinner (alcohol or water, depending on the paint) and about 40% paint. Sometimes you may even hav e to go thinner.

Have you taken the heads completely apart? Pull off the little cap on the back, and pull out the needle and the spring. The fatal flaw in the design is that the spring is in the paint path and is a natural for getting gummed up.

I ended up using lacquer thinner all the time, every time to strip down, clean and reassemble the tips, before I finally traded up to a Badger 105.

I thought I thinned my paint well enough, but obviously not ! I tried thinning the paint as suggested (40/60 ratio) and the problem seems to be solved.

I also dismantled the spray head completely and cleaned all the parts (needle, spring, plastic tub and head) which helped a lot. From now on I'll always take the heads apart for cleaning before proceeding to the next paint job !

Great many thanks for your help in this matter Bow Down

Testors also makes special nozzles for acrylic.  They are the black one and the white one.
