Yup... The car guys in my model circle us a 2 part clear gloss that cost about $100 for a half gallon or something. They go in an split it so it's not too bad, a little goes a long way. However, I think it's worth it because I watched one of them take a bare black primer car body and turn it into the deepest wettest shine you've ever seen in about 5 minutes.... easy as pie.

Sounds like urethane catalyzed clear like HOK. Very dangerous stuff!

Price of auto lacquer paints!

I often use auto paint in spray cans, like the Duplicolor stuff.  I use it on cars for a nice gloss paint job, and use black for an undercoat for Alclad.  Very glossy but still dries fast.

Recent trip to auto parts store showed a big jump in prices.  The small cans are gone, now only big cans, at about eight bucks a can!  That is about double what I paid the last time I bought the stuff a year or two ago.
