MM Acryl users-how much time before clear coating?
Posted by dirkpitt77 on Saturday, February 4, 2012 10:21 PM

Those of you who use Model Master's Acryl line of paints:  about how long do you wait for the Acryl to cure before you put on a clear coat such as Future?   In my experience the Acryls tend to dry pretty fast, being safe to handle in 20 minutes or so.  I'm worried about total cure time before I clear coat though, so I don't get cracked or crazed paint.  Thanks for any opinions!

Rule of thumb when you do not know how long it takes paint to cure is a day. Acrylics are great in that they "dry" enough to the touch in about 5 minutes depending on how thick of a coat however to allow for the paint to fully bond to the model allow it at least 12 hours I would say.

Also pledge super shine is interesting, I never really got good results on it. I feel as if the clear coat isn't as reflective as say a Testors Super gloss coat lacquer (comes in a spray can that you can probably buy at any local hobby store that carries hobby paint. Spary the clear coat on a plastic spoon and see how you like it.

Anyways that is my opinion, happy building!

*Edit* My comment on the clear coat is if you are looking to achieve shiny car finish I do not know if you are painting a car, plane, or whatever.

I use 100% Acrylics from both, MM and Tamiya. I never wait more than some 30 minutes before applying a coat of clear flat or gloss. For the only steps I would wait overnight to cure is either for masking for another camouflage color or when using Gloss Coat for decaling. I don't use Future for decaling, I use their Clear Gloss Coat. Have in mind that flat colors are porous and you could need a minimum of 2 coats of gloss to make the surface decal ready.

During my last builds I've been using instead of Acryl Gloss Coat, Alclad II AQUA GLOSS 600 with great results. It dries very fast too.

I'm working on AMT's 1/12 Bigfoot figure, so no need to go super glossy.  The clearcoat is basically just to seal each coat of paint.
