Iwata Revolution
Posted by Spurdog on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 11:03 AM

I'm thinking of buying an Iwata Revolution CR airbrush for fine work, such as mottling on Luftwaffe WW2 fighters and German WW2 tanks. I already have a Badger 200 and 100LG but I just can't seem to be able to get the ultra-fine work I strive for. With Iwata's reputation should I go for the Revolution CR? Funds are limited!!Confused

If it's fine / detail work you plant to do with it, the Revolution BR with it's 0.3mm set-up would be better suited than the CR which has an 0.5mm set up.

The 0.3mm set-up is available as an option on the CR, but would cost on top of the standard CR.

I have a slightly used Iwata Eclipse BCS (I think) gravity feed, if you are interested.  It works great but I need the cash... $50 plus shipping...  Also have a Badger 360, Rage or Velocity for the same price....  All are in great working order...  Send me a PM if you are interested.  This is your way of getting the next best airbrush for less money...

I was considering the BR as well but the only thing putting me off was the smaller paint cup. But since I wouldn't be using a lot of paint all at once this shouldn't be a problem. I was also thinking of getting the CR with its bigger cup and getting a 0.3mm tip and needle separately, thus getting the best of both worlds. However the extra cost (about 1/3 of the airbrush price) is putting me off.

The cost of shipping to Ireland would be fairly costly, I fear.....

The round trip airfare from Ireland will cost too much. Devil

yeah, your right. never though about that. i use both the HP-CS and HP-CR "revolution". i rarely use the CS. the CR produces a good enough fine line. if i want extra fine then the CS comes into play. other then that, the CR does everything i need.

If you want a .35 tip and a big color cup get the hp cs eclipse....thats what I use and I do plenty of Luftwaffe stuff...I'm sure lots of online places will ship to Ireland without breaking the bank.

The Harder & Steenbeck airbrushes are usually cheaper than Japanese or American made ones within the EU region. The H&S Evolution will meet your need nicely.

Is it easy to get merchandise shipped from UK? Just curious.

A little birdie tells me that Revolution pricing may be on the up sometime in the near future, on a more positive note, the Eclipse range is currently on special offer in the UK..............

What size needle and tip are you using on the 100LG?

From my searches on the internet, the medium needle and tip are around 0.50 mm and the fine is around 0.22mm.

Why not save yourself a lot of money and just buy a new tip and needle for your 100LG?

If you can't achieve the results you want with the fine tip, you may be struggling to do the same with an Iwata, but at least you will save yourself $$$.

Further to last, the LG also has a decent sized cup already built on.

My Iwata came with a messed up seal or o-ring, where the air hose attaches.  No info on how to replace it or what to order.  If I snug up the air hose connecter finger tight, it keeps blowing air when the trigger is released.  If I un-snug it, it works ok but leaks air at that connection.  The intruction manual gives no info on replacing that little donut seal.

Anybody have any ideas on this??

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

If it's the very bottom part of the air valve with the thread for fitting the hose that you're describing (?), there isn't a seal there on the airbrush, the flat face at the bottom of the thread relies on the seal inside your air hose end fitting to create an airtight seal.

If the airbrush is blowing air from the nozzle/air cap when the trigger is released, it most likely that the bottom of the air valve plunger is fouling in the air hose connection.

The lowest seal in the air valve is the small (approx. 3-4mm) plunger seal, but it's inside the air valve about 1/2 way up it.

Any help?

If you can't get fine lines with a Badger 100LG then I doubt any airbrush is going to help that.

Practice! Smile

Yes, it could be my lack of skill/lack of practice. I should experiment with different paint/thinner ratios, as I've tried different pressures. I can get a reasonable fine line or mottling but not fine enough.

I'm using the supplied tip and needle which is the fine version, so I should be doing better, I suppose.Embarrassed

I think with a fine tip on the 100LG, you should be getting some nice fine lines.

I agree - try a few different thinner ratios, but these will inevitably require some tuning with air pressure too.  If you use acrylics, throw in a few drops of retarder as well to see how you go.

Good luck - invest in practice before a new airbrush.

I have an HP-CS and the o-ring at the bottom sticks on the trigger so when I release it the brush keeps blowing, the trigger doesn't come back up. If it's the same set up pull the trigger out and lube the bottom portion.
