How to remove two layers from my model
Posted by HeadBanger on Friday, February 24, 2012 5:29 PM

Long story short, I have a Shelby Cobra body that I need to completely start from scratch.  So.... What would be a good way to remove a couple coats Glosscote Lacquer and the underlying Model Master enamel without melting the plastic?  I supposed I could just start sanding away, but I'm hoping to avoid all that physical labor.  ;-)

Thanks in advance

I usually soak the part in a bath of brake fluid.  Sounds harsh but it doesn't attack the plastic..

I had heard that Simple Green cleaner will remove paint. Theres also a paint remover made by Polly S  but I cant recall the name but it works great.

Glosscoat is a lacquer and I am not sure if Simple Green will remove lacquer. I doubt it.

Super Clean degreaser is the best followed by Easy-Off over cleaner. I don't recommend brake fluid as it is toxic and much harder to dispose of than Super Clean which is biodegradable.

I found that mr hobby thinner takes everthing off and leaves the plastic nice and shiny clean...the stuff is a bit pricey but worth it..it will save you lots of work. Good luck
