Yes, paint limits adhesion.  The glue glues the part to the paint, not the underlying plastic. The paint will then chip out if any stress is put on the part.

You need to scrape away the paint from gluing areas. If that is too difficult, I sometimes use a small drill and pinvise to drill little dimples through the paint layer into the plastic to help adhesion.

Cheers that's exactly the kind of advice that'll save me a lot of grief. I take it the rest of the list is OK.

In most cases, build the model before painting the parts, so you can fill the seams with putty or Mr. Surfacer, etc, and sand the joints smooth.   If you paint first, solvent glue will make a terrible mess by dissolving the paint when you try to assemble the model.  Only small fussy details should be left off and painted last, before carefully glueing them on.  Example: Landing gear, canopies, antennas, pitot tubes.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

Scrape the paint away from surfaces to be glued. The glue will mix with the paint and make an awful mess.

I’ll be painting my first model so I’ve done research on how to do it. Here are the steps I came up with. I haven’t started yet so any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated. The model is a motorbike

General Notes

Wash your hands frequently to avoid finger grease.

Allow parts to dry before going to next step, or next layer

1.    Wash parts with warm water and detergent while in spruce

(ア)  Dry naturally

2.    Determine what parts to paint in the spruce and what to glue and build

3.    Apply primer to painting parts

(ア)  Dry

(イ)  May need to sandpaper down to hide seams

4.    Mix paint with thinner (more thinner than paint) and apply thin coats. Brush strokes do not overlap, and paint in one direction. Let dry between coats.

(ア)  Possible wash

5.    Polish with sandpaper and rubbing compound and then apply decal before or after clear coat, depending on decal effect.

I’m wondering about gluing on painted parts, does the paint or clear coat affect adhesion?
