Star Trek Enterprise D Project
Posted by CPotts on Monday, March 5, 2012 1:33 AM

Good Morning,

I'm embarking on a large project and I'd like some tips. Judging by blurbs on the different forums I came to the conclusion that this is the best place to post due to this being primarily painting related.

But first, here is the model I plan on purchasing, if someone has a better recommendation please feel free to let me know.

Finally, the game plan:

The reason I'm purchasing this one is because it meets a few requirements. Based on my knowledge of kits (note: average) it looks good for my needs, plus it comes in all clear plastic. I'm being a bit ambitious and planning on including lighting with this model so there will be some extensive painting. Also, I plan on creating one for myself, then once I finish this purchase another kit and do it a second time for my father. I've purchased kits for the ol' man in the past but the boxes just collect dust. He says his eye sight just isn't what it used to be for fine detailing and he just can't seem to find the time anymore. Thus, I'm taking his love for models and Star Trek and removing the part he can't do himself anymore by just giving him a complete present! Just as an "I love ya pops" kind of gift that I know he will appreciate. There's no time constraint for a holiday or anything, I just want to give it to him when I'm happy with the work I've done and when its as close to perfect as I can get it.

Now, the inquiries:

How by the beard of Zeus would I go about painting large clear pieces that are no doubt in store for me in this kit? My primary road block right now I'm thinking is the saucer... plus, leaving clear spots open for the windows? I am aiming high... but hey isn't that what life is about?

During my reading I've found that there are some delicate issues when dealing with clear pieces of a model. Such as a jet canopy or other window pieces. Seeing as how I am painting clear pieces in this model kit solid metal colors, will I need to be careful with how I glue them together? One website references some model glues drying and the fumes create warping or a fog effect on the interior of the pieces. I shouldn't have this problem, right?

Any recommendations of brands for this kind of undertaking? I know quality paint can really make a difference, but this... I mean this is a very special case considering this is an all clear model.

General tips and tricks welcome as well.

PS: I'm living on my own, so there's no need to conceal this project from my dad or anything, my work space has no special requirements. :)
