Metalizer sealer?
Posted by echolmberg on Sunday, April 22, 2012 10:05 AM

Hi guys!

I just finished my F-89 using Floquil enamels.  I'd like to apply a clear top coat to protect the decals.  What's the best top coat I can use that won't attack the enamel while, at the same time, not kill the nice metalic look?  I was going to use Testor's metalizer sealer but I noticed it said it was a lacquer.  I didn't know if that would have a bad reaction to the Floquil enamel.

Thanks for your help!

I think any sealer will in some way change the metallic sheen just a bit. Make sure the paint is cured so wait a couple of days at least and if using lacquer, apply it in light coats. Lacquer dries fast so give it a few minutes in between coats so it doesn't attack the enamel. Future should also be safe after the enamel is cured.

I used to use the Metallizer sealer on everything, for gloss before decals (even safe for clear parts). I bought a quart of "gloss laquer" for just a couple bucks more than the "special" metallizer sealer. Anyway, as P/J said...light coats (found out the hard way on my last project!)....and yes it will change the sheen a bit, takes away a bit of the "natural" in NMF.....but it doesn't look bad.

When in doubt, test it out....on something other than the model you're working on!

I guess it's just like everything in life:  Moderation is the key.  I've been burned (figuratively, not literally) in the past with applying a lacquer over enamels.  I didn't want it to happen again.

If you hand brush on a coat of future it will remain high gloss and being acrylic will not attack the enamel. If you airbush the future it doesn't get as glossy and changes the metal look more than hand brushing.
