Dry Tip
Posted by Masqurin on Sunday, July 15, 2012 1:46 PM

I recently purchased Iwata Revolution CR and I am really happy with it. I used a couple different enamels, with cleaning the airbrush in between the colours. I have one water based paint which I had to use and as soon as I poured it into the cup and started spraying, I immediately get dry-tip. Not 5 seconds, not 10, not 30 seconds. The second I pull the trigger back, paint dries up at the end of the needle. I had no problems with oil based paints whatsoever. I thinned the paint 1:1 with water, or even more to see if it would help. The only way to be able to use the airbrush again is removing the paint from bottle, and pouring 100% water in it and then spraying. Maybe there's something wrong with the paint? It seems to be very stiff for an acrylic. Its Revell aqua color 371.

Aqua Color Mix 2 in 1 - recopmmended by revell for using this paint in an airbrush. it con tains a retarder to slow dying. you could try any retarder for acrylic but ymmv.

Masqurin,

What pressure are you using?  It sounds to me as if the paint is just too thick to AB properly. Thinned to the consistency of milk is the 'rule of thumb' - was yours thicker? The Revolution CR will handle some thicker paints due to its 0.5mm nozzle so If your pressure is correct and you are still  getting a clogged tip I would look to the viscosity of the paint as the problem. "Dry Tip" doesn't usually prevent spraying, it causes spatters and messed up atomization of the paint but paint does come out of the airbrush. Yours sounds like a clogged nozzle from too thick paint or pressure to low (no paint comes out). I'm not familiar with Revell's Aqua Color line but have sprayed MM Acryl straight from the bottle with my Revolution. HTH

30 psi when spraying. As I said, I tried different consistencies. First, I started with "consistency of milk", I was able to get the enamel paints flowing ok so I knew what it has to look like more-less. But since it didnt work, I tried adding more and more water each time. I think I ended up with 2:1 water:paint and it still wouldnt flow normally. I also found this paint harder to wash up then the enamel which isnt right according to what I've read. With enamels, a bit of white spirit did the trick. And with acrylics, water wouldnt do much good on the paint that dried up on the sides of the bottle. I had to use special cleaner that came along with airbrush for cleaning acrylics. Last question, what happens with the acrylics as they get older? This paint didnt lay around for too long, not at all actually, at least not since I got it. But it seemed thicker than some of the enamels I got, but that was before thinning...
