Hi Scott,
I've not used Golden Airbrush colors but I have used their Fluid Acrylics. I think Golden is a first class outfit and their acrylics are great - high pigment density and easily reducible. The secret for me to get good adhesion to plastic models has been to add a small amount of GAC 200 (by Golden) to the mix after I have it to ABing consistency. I thin with Golden Airbrush Medium. The problem, of couse, is the available colors are not military colors so you have to mix colors to get what you want. A friend of mine has used Golden's heavy body acrylic colors reduced to ABing consistency with great results on his wood carvings. Add some GAC 200 to your Airbrush colors and it should work fine. Without the GAC 200 I had lifting problems when removing masking tape. HTH.
PS
I'm with you on the driving bit - no Tamiya paint within an hour and half drive for me.
