drying time on a wash

I get my artists supplies at Michaels with their 40% off coupons. They run them pretty much every week.

on the bright side, since you use a pea sized ball at a time,
and you can store it in a 4 oz glad disposable/resealble container for a while,
one tube may be a lifetime supply of that color!

if you look on my page on Claymore's Panther group build,
you can see a shot of the water colors i have.
the link is below, but you have to copy, paste & replace *AT* with @.
the FSM forum will not take the link w/ the @ in the middle for some reason.

Thanks wild! I need this kind of info! I i'll pick up some of those water colors tomorrow. Yep, 4 bucks a tube is quite a bit for a tube of paint that i'm going to thin anyway!lol I have a built-in buget called "kids"!lol

not sure which exact windsor & newton cotman colors you are using.
my are supply store seems to have 3 or 4 'grades'.
i get the cheapest and they are 2 to 4 dollars a tube.
i guess whether that is 'cheap' or 'not cheap' depends on your wallet & expectation!

not that you asked me, but i have lamp black, grey, burnt sienna and some kind of ochre
for washes.
blue, green, yellow, red to make filters.
considering how they are used, if there are choices within a color,
i buy the lowest price one!

yeah, DJ, what does the vinegar do?
and is it white vinegar or cider vinegar?

I'm gonna have to try those water colors. What colors did you get Ga modeler? My armour is white so everything looks too dark. I'm going to try grey next.

thanks guys. i think i over did it on the wash, yeah djmodels i put more like a lima bean dab than a pea dab. it made it turn out real dark but to me it looks good for the first one i did with the watercolor wash. those water colors arent cheap either. now i am going togo back and do my other models with this method of the wash.

ah, i was leaving out the dishwashing liquid! What does the vinagar do?

Let your wash dry by itself for a couple of hours. The liquid may collerct in the tracks and therefore require a bit more time. You can always place the model, tracks down, on a piece of kitchen towell and let the paper absorb the excess collecting there. I start my drybrushing with oils as soon as the was is dry (I'm not a patient man!).

As to the ratio, it's experience that will tell you, and also what your wash is for. Very dirty looking AFVs will take stronger washes (ie more paint) than new, cleaner looking ones. However, the water remains by far the main ingredient of my wash... Say for half a shot glass of water, I'll add a pea worth of paint, plus two or three drops of vinegar and one or two of dish-washing liquid... Always best to try with weaker washes than stronger ones. Adding washes is still easier than removing too much...

i can't give you a true ratio, but i am using the same water colors.
i use just a BB pellet sized blob of pigment to about an ounce
(say a shot glass) of water.
might be thinner than what you are looking for.

i have been also known to add a drop of liquid dish detergent,
for better flow. just don't stir it too vigorously, or you will have to let
the bubbles die down before you can apply.

always start somewhere unobtrusive (i like the bottom of the hull)
so you can see how it will go.

LOL Must admit I'm a newbie with washes. I've only done the Winston oil based thinned with mineral spirits at about a 90-10 ratio. I haven't heard of water based being used so I probably shouldn't guess a ratio. You might try 90-10 and add more until you get a preferred amount. i wished I had put more on myself. Good luck.

Where is this method you're using because right now I have hit a dead end with the alcohol and acrylic method?
