Craft acrylic paints?
Posted by Leddy on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 6:11 AM

Can you airbrush with craft acrylic water solulble paints like Creamoat or American or Folk Art?   They are commonly found at Hobby Lobby and Michael''s.

Thanks!

You can airbrush any paint as long as it is suitably reduced. Whether it adheres to the subject adequately or not is another question entirely. :-)

Leddy,

Yes, you can airbrush craft acrylics. There was an article about it in a recent FSM. I've used Apple Barrel and FolkArt and also Golden Fluid Acrylics. Craft acrylics need to be thinned at least 50/50 for starters and to get good adhesion you need to add a few drops of GAC 200 to the mix - final mix should be of consistency of other acrylics you use. I think they AB similar to other water miscible acrylics. In my experience, those labeled 'gloss' adhere to plastic better than those without the 'gloss' on the label unless you add the GAC 200. I use AB medium as a reducer (thinner) and have also used Future as a thinner. You usually have to mix 'n' match to get the color you want though - craft acrylics don't come in military colors.

I have airbrushed them, and I thinned at least 50/50.

Everyone else has already answered your question but I will add one thing. Get ready to deal with some tip dry issues.

What is AB medium and GAC 200?   Where can they be obtained?

Thanks!

Leddy,

GAC200  is an acrylic polymer medium that improves paint film hardness and adhesion and is an additive to acrylic paints. Airbrush medium is an acrylic polymer 'thinner' used for thinning acrylic paints. Both are sold by Golden Artists Colors (GAC) and Airbrush Medium is sold by Liquitex, Golden and probably others. I got mine from the internet but Michaels, ACMoore or an artists supply retailer should have them. Check the Golden Site for some information.
