Beginner- Acrylic or Enamel paint sequence?? HELP
Posted by perchbug on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 9:43 PM

Hello,

Just trying to get things straight, hopefully someone can help.

1. If I use an enamel base coat should my clear coat be acrylic and vice versa? Or does it not matter?

2. I watched videos on You Tube and I can’t get the paint sequence and type right for the hairspay chipping technique . Is it enamel base, some kind of varnish or lacquer, hairspray then acrylic?

Sorry if these questions are super basic but I could really use some help.

Thanks

The rule of thumb with lacquers and enamels used to be, you could use enamels over lacquers, but not vis versa.  What you have to watch now, is that there are acrylic lacquers and acrylic enamels, but the cans often omit the term acrylic.  So some paints sold as lacquers and enamels are actually acrylic lacquers or acrylic enamels, and it is opening up a can of worms!  Best bet is to do tests on scrap materials.
