A quick primer question.
Posted by wargamr63 on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 9:11 PM

So i've read lots of reviews and i see some guys use your standard gray type of primer and others say  to use black. I was just wondering if either is better than the other. I lean towards using gray, but would appreciate any input.

Thanks.

I like grey primer since it shows imperfections easier then black does. Also a black primer coat seems to really darken the basecoat, so I like to just pre-shade the panel lines with black.

The color of the primer will to some extent affect the color of your final coat.  For instance, if you are painting a tan surface, it will look darker over gray primer than over white primer.  So it all depends on the final result you are looking for- this falls under the "pre-shading" category.

If you paint some areas or panels with black primer and others with gray or white, you will end up with a subtle color shading variation after you apply the color coats.  The result can be very realistic if done right, but it takes practice.
