How safe is Tamiya paint to brush?
Posted by GreySnake on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 7:21 PM

Hey guys! I'm just wondering if Tamiya paint is safe to brush without a respirator? I know when air brushing you should always use a respirator. But is the paint stable enough to use while brush painting without having to worry? I've done a lot of searching and really can't come up with anything solid. Thanks guys!

Tamiya paint is fine regarding fumes/odor for hand brushing. But it really sucks to hand brush. It dries way too quick and does not hand brush well. You can play with it by adding their thinner or distilled water to improve its' hand brushing properties, but it is very much a trial and error process.

Thank you! That puts my mind at ease  finally. Ever sense one of my family members died from lung cancer. I've been paranoid about the chemicals that are used in modeling.

Regarding brush painting Tamiya. I've always had good luck painting small parts with it tools etc. But yeah it is bad for larger areas.

Thanks again! Now I'm finally working up the nerve to hit the bench after a year away!

Add one part X-20A thinner to three parts paint and it will completely transform its brushing properties.

The usual rules still apply though - avoid brushing over dry/partially dry areas to prevent it pulling up. If recoating is required, let it cure overnight before doing so.

Dont like how Tamiya paint brushes. Have been modeling and painting & spraying without a mask for nearly 47 years so I guess I should be dead! Surprise

If you're spraying, wear a respirator.  If you're brushing, especially acrylics, no sweat/
