Airbrushes and old guys
Posted by canuck4 on Sunday, December 9, 2012 7:11 PM

My part of the world is cold right now .  Theres snow and wind and you want to stay inside.  So, gentle reader you have the scene-the old guy (c"est moi) has been enjoyning FSM for several years-have learned all about glues and putty and all that stuff. Have finally been able to finish some of the models in the Cache so that they are not bad.  All except painting.  Have made several models (particularly my only CF-l00 model) unrecognizable.  FSM says - airbrush is answer-bought a single action airbrush-not bad.  While FSM has not  really indicated the double action is better they sort of said it was more controllable.  Oh Well,-got one -first try did not bad at all.  Then comes today.--out to shop.  Mix paint  (wearing disposable gloves-great idea (FSM)-load into brush and spray.........nothing comes out but air....OH MY...maybe I didn"t clean it properly.  Started to dismantle...dropped trigger on floor...OH DRAT... crawlled on cold floor -think I found all of the bits.....dismantle a bit more..  drop more parts...40 years of Sgt/Majors disaproval comes to mind.(Canadian Sgt/Majors are bi-lingual and have served in many parts of the world so can swear in may languages...said several things that I am ashamed of)   Dropped more parts on floor-knees hurt from crawlling.   Finally got all of those tiny little parts on the bench..am really breathing hard.  Prepare to fling the whole bl.. lot thru the window...remember reading in FSM..read the intstructions.  What the darn, nothing can get worse....FSM..read the instructions...maybe if I check the needle valve....OH FOOO..works like a darn.  Byt this time the paint I have mixed is kinda thick and I use a lot but it works..sorta.  Memo to self..read the instructions even if you know all about it....keep reading FSM.

Cheers troops--stay warm

From one old guy to another, hang in there brother!  You'll get better, much better.  All it takes is practice and patience, practice and patience.  All I use is a single-action Paasche Model H, and I've had the darned thing since 1988.  It still gives me fits at times.  No worries!  Just keep practicing and take a deep breath.  Oh, and I know all about those foul words.  My wife sometimes sticks her head into the study and says, "aren't you supposed to be having fun?"  I tell her "I am, I am, it's just this blankety-blank part!! Lol.  Big SmileKeep the faith bud!

You will normally see many of us recommending lots of practice on a new airbrush before trying it on a model!  Airbrushing is not an art acquired just be reading about it. It is more like learning to ride a bike or learning to play tennis.

Can't help with the dropping of stuff on the floor, though.  For me it is just part of modeling.  I even have a lap apron fastened to my workbench, but forget to drape it over my knees until AFTER the tiny part (usually model part) falls on the floor.  Yes, I am constantly closing barn door after horses escape!

Also can never remember to replace drill press chuck key on its storage magnet.  Always have to look all over workbench for it, even after having a drill press for 25 or 30 years!

Funny, I can learn new modeling techniques (PE, Alclad, etc) but not the old standard shop practices :-(

Just as an idea if its that cold you may need to add some retarder to the mix and thin it a little more. When I practice before hitting a model I use the insides of old cereal boxes, cheap clean and already come in grey (well they do on this side of the pond) and I practice before every model
