Mixing up some caution!
Posted by Dodger57 on Thursday, December 13, 2012 5:54 AM

Hey all!

Before I waste any more paint ... my paint mixing skills are weak. Please suggest some ways to achieve the yellow below. I'm assuming yellow as a base, then I've tried mixing in some brown, orange, gold - but it just never pops in. Anyone ever mixed up their own warning yellow? :)

Thanks!

Daf

Looks like yellow with orange, and maybe some red/brown? Maybe try laying down a red-brown pre-shade line first?

Try picking up a color wheel at an art supply store, and checking out a book from your library on oil or acrylic painting.  Most of the introductory books give sections on color mixing.  For your particular problem, consider how to increase or decrease saturation. It is easier to start with a highly saturated color and reduce saturation than to start with a low saturation color and add saturation.

Thanks, Don - I'm headed to Hobby Lobby tomorrow and will grab a color wheel. I'll see what I can find in the way of books on the subject as well. :)

Dodger57,

If you're using acrylics, 'School Bus Yellow' is an easy find in craft acrylic paint in stores like Michaels and WalMart. If you're into mixing your own this VIRTUAL PAINT MIXER might help.
