Alclad II and AM F3F-1 and 2
Posted by cvsusn on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 5:54 PM

I built the Accurate Miniatures' F3F-2 previously using SnJ's acrylic aluminum and silver.  They worked very well, but SnJ is no longer making paints.

Alclad II peeked my interest yet the number of aluminum shades is confusing.  If you built any of the AM Yellow Wings models with Alclad, what options do you recommend?

Thanks!

The F3F's weren't bare aluminum, they were painted with aluminum lacquer, so I would go with a silver paint rather than with Alcad.

I concur.  However, an explanation of Alclad's aluminum colors.  The polished aluminum is to represent what its name implies.  Few aircraft skins were regularly polished- maybe squadron commander's plane, and older airliners (AA used to keep their skins very shiny).  And, some military prototypes were highly polished as a showpiece for the vender.  To get the polilshed appearance proper undercoat is essential.

Their regular aluminum is proper for most in-service aircraft. For really heavily weathered, beatup old planes the white aluminum looks proper.

Thanks, Bronto and Don.  Your inputs are important.

I think I'll use the regular aluminum on the fuselage and interior and perhaps a silver color of some kind to replicate the doped fabric on the wings.  Any recs for a suitable silver.  Again, my previous was the silver offered by SnJ.

I think a gloss aluminum paint represents doped fabric better than a super-shiny silver like Testors or Floquil silver.  But it should be glossy- Testors has a flat aluminum but that would not be proper for doped fabric.  Flat aluminum is for castings like the cast aluminum parts on landing gears.
