Air tank instead of compressor for air brushing???
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, March 15, 2003 5:34 AM
Hi everyone!!!

I have a 20 gallon portable air tank that i used to use to fill tires and pool toys with. I used to fill it up at the local gas station.
Since i bought an air compressor of my own ( craftsman 3hp 60 gal.) i dont use the paortable tank any longer.
Can i use this tankto power a airbrush??? I realize i would haveto add a pressure regular and the like, but would this be a feasable adventure????
30 gal. is alot of air for an air brush right???

I have not yet bought my first real air brush yet. I use a Testor can model right now...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks and God Bless!!!!

Yes, you can do that. I did it brfore I got a compressor. Set it up the same way you do a compressor, and you can fill it at the gas station, or if you work with compressed air, at work. It worked great for me, just be sure it's full before starting a painting session.
Oh, there was a article in FSM sometime back on this subject. I'll try to find it, if you e-mail me through the website with your e-mail address, I'll scand it to you when I find it.

Before I bought my compressor (Porter Cable 6hp 25 gal) I went out and bought a 10gal tank.......but soon found that didn't last very long. So out to the garage it went (great for bike tires and the like). Then I picked up a 20 gal and found that did much better.

Now I just use the compressor and use the spare tank only when I am out in the compressor and need a backup. The compressor is way to loud to run while people are sleeping.

Good luck!

I've always been fortunate in that my Dad was bringing neat stuff home from work, including all sortsa bottles and tanks.

How's this for a backup air supply? A 115 cubic foot capacity composite commercial aviation oxygen cylinder rated at 1850psig? LMAO! Tongue [:P]

We would have NEVER used that thing, even if it had been considered "safe" to do so. Besides, it was a scrapped test article. But one could dream, though, couldn't he? hehe

Yes it will work! 30 gal should be plenty of air to get you through a couple of models. I use a 10 gal tank with a seperate compressor to fill it and I can go for quite a while before I need to refill it again.
You need a regulator (which I think you already talked about) and likely a moisture trap, but other than that you're pretty much ready to go!
