Having issue with tamiya paints....

That's ugly ... I feel your pain; wish I could help. Is it possible there was something on the surface that reacted with the solvent?

I use 90% isopropyl alcohol to thin Tamiya acrylics and they are dry to the touch in a few minutes. Last night I masked an area (by accident!) with regular masking tape (not the low-tack type) less than 30 minutes after I airbrushed it. I cringed when I pulled the tape up, but everything stayed put.

I made sure to clean it before painting, so there wasnt anything on the surface, plus when i am building i always use gloves, so i wonder, yeah it was glossy and sticky, they were flat dark gray paints and it is wierd cuz i used their thinner for it! very annoying but i am giving it a few more days, but I am not sure maybe its an isolated incident.

Can't say that I have had that problem, the only thing I can think of is maybe that the thinner was faulty or was their enamel thinner which can cause problems with acrylic paint.

Well that kills my theory. Did you perhaps move the model from a warm area where you were building to a cooler area to paint? If so maybe some condensation formed on the skin.

Yeah, but those isolated incidents can happen at the most inopportune moments. And unless I can figure out what causes them I always worry about them happening again. I'd really be interested to know what caused this if you can figure it out. Maybe South Aussie is right and it was just a bad batch.

I've never had any problems with Tamiya's enamels or acrylics. Make sure you're using the appropriate thinner. (X-20 for enamel, X-20A for acrylic)
I have no idea what effect using the wrong thinner would have, but that might be it.

Tamiya's acrylics dry lightning-quick, especially when airbrushed.

Your comment that the paint remains sticky sounds like what happens when enamel paint is applied to vinyl. What type of material did you paint?

hi ,i use humbrol and i found if the paint is old or near empty as in my flat black it will look glossy,just a thought.

I was painting on normal plasitc surface, it could possibly be that i thinned it too much? or the fact that i have an aztek airbrush, starting to hate the thing, so im thinking maybe i thinned it too much

It amuses me how you guys spend money on tamiya thinner when I add a bit of water and a drop of dish soap and get flawless results!

I shoot Tamiya straight most of the time. If I do need to thin I use a little tap water. Works fine. I've played with flow enhancers, airbrush medium and thinner and find that it all works fine. And I use an Aztek with no problems and great results. In fact the Aztek does a wonderful job shooting the Tamiya Acrylics.

The stickyness problem sounds like a problem with the thinner you used. Possibly too much? Or is it possible that it has been contaminated with something else?

Too much or too little of the appropriate thinner should have no effect on whether the paints stays sticky or not.
Sounds like a compatibility problem.

Sounds like a problem that's actually common with Gunze Aqueous acrylic paint. The paint just won't cure. I've had it happen with Tamiya too but very seldom and don't know what caused it. Used the same bottle of paint and same bottle of thinner that produced normal finish so it's not a compatibility issue. Did you spray the paint on too think so it started pooling? Maybe that's why it won't dry.

Come to think of it, is that sticky mess you have like the sticky paint that collects under the bottle cap and thread of the Tamiya paint jars? The paint that get's stuck there seems to never dry either.
