So, I am wrapping up my recent build, a Tamiya Me Bf109 and I finished up weathering and am ready to seal the deal with some Testor's Dullcote when I realize I didn't buy any thinner for it. Well, I did but it ended up being enamel thinner, my fault, just assumed that since it was sitting right next to the Dullcote that it would be the correct one.
Anyhow, being the resourceful (impatient) person that I am, I give the Dullcote a sniff, smells like lacquer (pretty sure it says so on the bottle, lol). The only other lacquer stuff I have is Alclad, no thinner though, just airbrush cleaner. I figure I don't have anything to lose other than 3 weeks of hard work so I go ahead and give it a 2:1 Alclad/Dullcote mix and spray away.
The end result was awesome, it went down great and dried smooth as silk. I don't think I'll bother buying any Testor's lacquer thinner, I'll just double up my Alclad AB cleaner purchase. Doesn't hurt that it's only $3.50 for a 4oz bottle, too. This result may not surprise some folks but I was pleasantly so. I was a little intimidated by the Testor's label saying to ONLY use the respective thinner and I know that not all products play nice across the board, regardless of having the same base.
So for future reference, hope this helps some folks running into the same issue or for someone who just didn't know and happen to have the same items on they shelves.
Cheers!
