What flat coat over Future?
Posted by R-4360 on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 8:57 PM

I paint with enamels, then use Testor's glosscote, followed by Dullcote. Sometimes that yellows over time, especially on white. If I use Future, what flat coating would be best?

a very small percentage of Tamiya X-2 Flat Base mixed with Future will give you a Semi-Gloss or Flat coat for use over gloss Future

I can't say how much, because it seems to vary with the humidity,,,,,,,but, I will warn you to start out with small amounts and work your way up,,,,,,,at a certain level, you will get a very dead flat, a flat past the point that you want on a model,,,,,,,,and at the next level,,,,,you will get "frost flakes" showing in your clear coat

another option is to run out to your LHS before they sell out and buy some Floquil PollyScale Rail Road bottles of the Satin and Flat clear, you can mix them to get the level of Flat that you want,,,,,,,,thin those with a mixture of 50/50 distilled water and blue windshield washer fluid,,,,,,again you have to experiment, but, start at 10% thinner mix to paint, and vary that for your thickness test to see if it is ready to airbrush,,,,,,,,you use the Blue washer because it helps with the stalling of the yellowing with white enamels,,,,,,if you really want to fight the yellowing of white,,,,,,paint those parts in White Acrylic over your enamel base coat, then clear with Future and the mixtures

there is one more great clear coat available, AlClad II Aqua,,,,,,,but, I have only used that full strength, I have no idea how it interacts with flattening agents, yet

I spray MM dullcoat over future, and have never really had any problems.   Just have to give the future about a week to dry completly.

Flat acrylic can be sprayed over Future any time. If using something else wait at least 2-3 days for the Future to cure, just in case. I try to stay away from Dullcote and Glosscote cuz of the yellowing you mentioned over time so I use MM acrylic flat or Tamiya flat.

I've been doing test shots with MM Acrylic gloss & flat over enamel, as well Future over enamel, then a MM Acrylic flat top coat. It all worked quite well.

I even did heavy wet coats & it's somewhat hard to screw up - although you can cause  runs if you try.

By the way, I think the yellowing of Testors white enamels and their clear topcoats are a thing of the past. I have not had any problems with that in several years.

Unfortunately, they keep changing their clear topcoat formulas.  Recent versions of Glosscoat were terrible, but they seemed to have changed again, and those labeled "lacquer" now seem to be back up to snuff.

What are you using to thin the Dullcote with? A wise modeller once told me about using Dullcote out of the bottle, not the rattle can, anyway you had to cut the Dullcote with Testors Metalizer Thinner 50 / 50 . I have been well pleased with the results. Good Luck!

Since Dullcoat is a lacquer paint - I always used lacquer thinner, or Diosol. But Testors metalizer thinner is.....lacquer thinner. But your paying $5-$6.00 for 1 ounce, You can get a quart of lacquer thinner for $6.00

Many years ago, when I used Dullcoat and Glosscoat, I thinned them with plain ol' hardware-store lacquer thinner.  It always worked fine. Good luck!

I will say when using MM Acrylic flat- make sure you stir & shake it well. On the first test shot of the flat, I just shook it 2-3 times & sprayed it....it dried to a  semi gloss. Then I stired & shook it thoroughly, and it dried flat. The trick is the stir & shake unitl it looks like white paint - then you're ready.
