Yeah, I've done it before without any problems. The Tamiya primer I've used dried to a semi-gloss, didn't sand at all, and got good results.

I think my biggest concern was the compatibility between the Tamiya primer and the Alclad.  I've only done one model using Alclad and I used Krylon gloss black.  I was thinking of doing my F-101 in Alclad but I wasn't sure how the Alclad would look with a grey undercoat as opposed to the gloss black.

I actually don't think I need to sand the Tamiya primer.  I am absolutely amazed at how smoothly it goes on.  I tried the product on a whim once and have been sold on it ever since.  I've always had problems with tiny gaps at the wing/fuselage joint and the Tamiya primer seems to take care of it for me.

Yes, Alclad II will show up very well over Tamiya Primer.  Just make sure you sand over the primer with fine grits of sandpaper to remove and flaws and make it nice and smooth.

You only need the gloss black undercoat for the "High Shine" colors like Chrome, Polished Aluminum, Airframe Aluminum, Stainless Steel and Brass.  And even then it doesn't have to be gloss black.  It can be other colors to give various tones.  But gloss black makes it the shiniest.
