I read on one of the post about using cases that were made for holding Hot Wheels cars. I've purchased 2 from Wall-Mart and they allow me to keep the paint seperated by type etc. and you can see through the case to find the color your looking for. Also has a handle to carry them from one place to another. I love them. [:]

Well, first we have to approach the "budget committee" to see if she'll approve. . .

Just something I "threw" together If you're serious I'm willing to make them.

I need to know the paint bottle Dia's (unless u see it in my pic) And the # of bottles

I'll try to work up a cost based on each one.

i use one of the clear plastic boxes from walmart that was under a buck. To find the paints quicker , I make little labels and tape them to the the top of the paint lid. No more pulling out 20 jars to find one color

I use a couple of those partitioned plastic holders for my humbrols. just pull it out and look at the top and pick your color.

I too went the spice rack route. I made mine. It's got seven shelves, each about 18" long and about 1.5" deep. It holds about 80 bottles of paint and each bottle has the label facing forward for easy identification.
I made it using 1.5" wide slats, a piece of .25" plywood for backing and minimal carpentry skills. Just watch out! My wife wants me to make her a similar rack for holding her rubber stamps.

Same problem here, Quincy. I could come up with a plan and I could get any materials I need at work, but; where would I put it? Between my computer and my modeling "stuff" I'm already taking up an entire wall and corner of the spare bedroom! Then there's the problem of "display" space!Smile [:)]

Spice racks are a great idea. Another is to make your own racks. Several years ago I came across a set of drawings in a British model mag for a rack to store paint. It was a board with several shelves on it made from light weight aluminum which was attached to the board with 1/2" x 1/2" square blocks of wood of various lengths (determined by the size of your bottles) and sheetrock screws. The nice things about it is that each individual bottle was visible, you could label the paint color on the aluminum, size it to fit, all the items needed to build it are easily available, and can be built in one evening.

The only problem is that in my new (to us) house, I don,t have room for one which will hold all my paints.

Well, if you were insane, you could make an Excel spreadsheet with all the paint colors and then organize your paints into rows/columns.

Example: Look up Interior Green

You'd see "Drawer 2, A12 (row/column)"

Thanks for all the replys! It looks like we're all in the same boat here. I'm also leaning toward Kingbone's rack idea. I already have a one level spice rack attached to the side of my paint booth. It's great for larger items, like cleaning solvents, spare bottles, etc. but paint bottles still have to be picked up one at a time to read them. I guess this is where we get really creative and build our own! That's what makes the hobby interesting, right?Smile [:)]

One plan I have is to buy or make Spice Racks. Mounted on the wall, eye level. All the labels would be facing me.

I have yet to discover a way to store paint in such a manner that you can grab the color of paint you need without having to do a little searching. Currently I store my paints in plastic drawers. I seperate them by manufacter (MM, Testors, Humbrol etc), then by country (German, US, British etc). Still have to search for the exact color I want though.

I got (at Wal-Mart) these 3-drawer organizers. They are about 11"
square and a hard plastic with tupper-ware type material drawers.
The drawers are 2 1/2" deep. I use those for my Humbrol, Xtracolor,
and WEM Colourcoats enamels. Each drawer will hold 63 tins. Also
keep my airbrush bottles and cap adapters in one drawer.
And separate my PE stuff in other drawers. You could also use
a drawer for brushes, sand paper, whatever. These are also
stackable and I got two for a total of 6 drawers.
May buy another one., or two LOL!

I'm curious as well Mose!!! I have MM enamels, MM Acryls, and Tamiya Acryls.....I keep the three seperate, but in those Cheap plastic bins you get from Target, and it takes me a few minutes to find what I'm looking for, and it's usually the last bottle I look at, no matter what end I start from!!!

As my stock of paint bottles grows; It gets harder to find colors. I've tried a couple of different containers and right now I'm mainly using a fishing tackle box. I've outgrown that nowSad [:(] I'm curious about what other modelers use. Most of my paint is ModelMaster acrylics. I'm open to suggestions!
