Masking lines on rotor blades?
Posted by Raven Morpheus on Friday, August 23, 2013 6:51 AM

Hello

My Mk1 eyeball isn't all that good when it comes to masking lines on the tips of rotor blades, I have been using 0.5cm Tamiya tape to do it and I never seem to get it properly straight or equally wide across all rotors/stripes, so I'm wondering if there's a fool proof technique I could adopt?

In particular I'd like a method for painting those dead even red/white/red bands you see on helicopter tail rotors.

Thanks in advance for any tips on this.

This sounds like a perfect place for a jig.  Trace the outline of the blade tip area on a sheet of white styrene.  Now use a square or protractor to lay out a line perpendicular to one of the sides at the right point.  Extend this line at least a quarter inch- maybe even a half inch- beyond the blade outline.

Now clamp that jig to each blade end and lay a piece of tape across at the line you made.

That is so simple I should have thought of that myself!

Thanks, I'll give that a go.
