Thayer & Chandler Air Star V low pressure
Posted by Melkavitch on Saturday, August 31, 2013 2:46 PM

Hi,

I finally got around to checking out the Badger 150 air brush I bought at  a flea market and my Thayer & Chandler Air Star V. The compressor turns on fine, but the gauge only goes to about 15, maybe 20 lbs of pressure. Then when I use the air brush, the pressure drops to 10 lbs. I have tried to adjust the pressure all the way up, but no difference. I know the air brush is probably no good, but I would think I would get a good reading from the compressor to start. I have made sure the water trap is closed so no air escapes there. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike

Have you checked it for air leaks? I have an airstar V. Take the shroud off and 'paint' a soapy water solution around the joints. It could be a bad pressure switch? (The round.part where the electric cord goes into). I rebuilt my airstar v. Pressure switch went bad. There is an adjustment on it you can try. Make sure it's unplugged, take the round cover off the switch and there's a star looking dial you can move either way. Also, the most common parts to cause leaks are the metal flutter valves or the cylinder ring. I got the spare parts from badger.

Correction. "Cylinder ring" ... Meaning 'piston ring seal'. There is a parts schematic for the air star v online. Good luck!

Thanks! I'll give that a try. I have the schematic and I'm capable of surgery, well semi capable!

Yep, X2 on what panzerpilot said. I don't think your airbrush is what's bad here.
