Tamiya Metallic Editions
Posted by KiwiCanuck on Monday, October 28, 2013 1:47 PM

Hi there,

While traveling, I recently picked up a 1/48 Tamiya p-47 Razorback 'Metallic Edition'

Didn't realize until much later that this meant everything was metallic. Ugh. Can these editions still be painted over using regular airbrush methods, or do I need to strip the finish using cleaners to get paint to stick?

I have their MiG-15 that was all chromed when I got it.  I removed the plating by socking the parts in full strength Simple Green cleaner.  After soaking them for a couple days, I used an old toothbrush to remove any of the softened plating left.  Some have recommended oven cleaner too, but I've not tried that.

Straight Household Bleach will do the job too followed by the "old toothbrush". I think (I might be wrong) you can primer the parts and then paint as usual. Try it on a scrap of the sprue first to be sure. Hope this helps.
