simulating gold mesh
Posted by To Orbit! on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 6:58 PM

Hi guys,

Has anyone ever tried to simulate gold (or copper) mesh on a solid surface?  I'm painting an S-band antenna that was used during the Apollo missions.  I got a pretty decent look with a gold wash over a black surface, but I was just wondering if there were other techniques.  Thanks!

I have simulated mesh on a solid surface, but not in a metallic. It was a radar antenna, so the basic idea was similar. I used the fine mylon mesh from a tea bag (Starbucks Green Tea to be precise) attached to the plastic piece with extra thin super glue. I am sure it could be used in a similar manner on your kit partand painted in the proper colors.

I've simulated meshes over sold surfaces by making an inkjet decal of the mesh.
