Try Windex on dried Vallejo primers and you'll witness the ugliest gunk on this planet.

I've never had a problem with Vallejo's grey primer, so my first question would be what color are you using?  I've heard white is a nightmare for some reason.  Second, what are you using to clean?  I've invested in their airbrush cleaner, I thin that half and half with water for an 'inbetween' shots clean and strait for a 'finished for the day' clean.  It will tip dry, so you want a bit of a cleaner (whether their brand or not) and a q tip to clean the nozzle tip as you go.  I thin the primer all the time, about fifty fifty with their brand of thinners (I find water makes it too wet) and have had no ill effects.  The only drawback to their primer I've found is that it does not like sanding or remedial work.

At the end of all of my priming work, I put the brush through an ultrasonic cleaner, a bit of an investment (about $80) but well worth it.

Also, to add to the notes above, alcohol and Vallejo paints are a huge mess, I've never had a problem using windex to clean my tools.  I find it's not as effective as an ultrasonic or their brand of cleaner, but it does work for me.

Hope that all helps, and if you're using a different color of primer, give the light grey a try, it's always worked like a dream for me.

Ammonia + Vallejo primer = Huge Mess.

I use Simple Green to clean Vallejo primers.  Lacquer thinners work extremely well, too.  I spray a mix of 50% Vallejo primer and 50% distilled water + Flow-Aid.  Flow-Aid really helps prevent a dry tip.  Lots of people swear by the Vallejo primer.  Once you know how to work with it, you'll love the result.

This is great stuff! Use denatured alcohol to clean and thin slightly with Vallejo airbrush cleaner maybe 30% thinner to 70% primer.

Vallejo surface primer - very hard to clean

Hi all,

Anyone familiar with Vallejo surface primer? I sprayed it out of my airbrush for the first time last night, and it clogged up the airbrush within 15 mins. It was a nightmare to clean too, took me almost 2 hours of stripping down the airbrush to clean up the gunk. Even my regular airbrush cleaning fluid doesn’t seem to dissolve it all that well (Gunze Mr. Tool Cleaner). The airbrush is still not fully clean and I am getting bubbling in the cup when trying to flush with water. I am sending it back to the shop today for help in fact.

I didn’t thin it before airbrushing, since the instructions and many people online said it doesn’t require thinning. I googled this problem online and it has happened to some, but not others. Some people reported that thinning with water helps, some said it doesn’t. Some posts reported that Vallejo airbrush cleaner or Medea airbrush cleaner works well. Unfortunately it is difficult to find these in my country, local hobby shops mostly stock the Japanese stuff. I bought the Vallejo primer online.

I don’t know if I should just write off the Vallejo primer as a bad investment, or attempt it again thinned with water. I’d hate to waste another few hours cleaning out the airbrush, I just want to start painting my model, dang it!
