Help with paints
Posted by joewhite on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 7:44 PM
I was looking for some tips when using Model Master Acyrlics. Like what thinner works best. Or just what works best to thin in general. I'm painting a vinyl model kit and I want to be sure I am using some good paint before I apply. Also, if it helps, I am using a Badger Anthem 155. Thanks!!!!

Can't help with the MM paints.

I hope you washed the Vinyl parts inside and out and have the Kit puttied and primed prior to laying down your first colour.

Good luck painting a vinyl kit. It's very hard for paint to not peel off from vinyl, but you started off with the right choice of using acrylic paint. Enamel paints won't adhere to vinyl. I doubt MM Acryl will stick very well to vinyl either.

Thanks for the advice! Well, I did wash the model but I didn't pay as much attention to the inside as I did the outside. The model is mostly filled with expanding foam now. It is my first vinyl kit and I did a bunch of research before I started. So I know paint doesn't adhere well to unwashed vinyl but I wasn't aware the inside had to be washed also. What could happen if I didn't wash the inside well?

As far as "body work". It is being puttied and will be primed. I also knew that acrylics were the way to go but I wasn't sure about MM paint. The bummer is that they have the color I need. Well, I guess it's time to look at different paint lines.

Thanks again!!!!

Most likely nothing, cheap vinyl (often used for recasts) can leak some fluids/oil that can react with your putty and/or leak out.

If the Kit is primed what type of colours you use should not make a difference as the colour is now applied to the primer and no longer to the underlying vinyl.

All you got to make sure is that the colour won't dissolve the primer.

I think I'm lost now. When you say "puttied", I think you are talking about defects, like filling airholes. Am I right or are you talking about something else? LMK, thanks.

I am talking about putty that is used for joint filling/repairs and similar.
