Can you premix and store Future/flat base mixture?
Posted by CN Spots on Saturday, February 22, 2014 4:13 PM

I was airbrushing the matte finish on a model today and it took a few tries to get the finish the way I wanted and I started wondering if anyone had ever just made up a batch of premixed Future and Tamiya flat base and kept it for future (ha ha) projects?

I haven't, but I know you can. I keep pre mixed Gunze and Tamiya paints pre thinned in jars all the time. I do use those extra Tamiya and Gunze glass jars you can buy for a buck or two. My wife is also a dental assistant and brings home nice sealable containers meant for expoxy.-- You will want to stir it really well each time before you use it, as the flat base will settle out.

I can't answer specifically in re Tamiya Flat black and Future but, I use a lot of Craft acrylics and often use Future as a thinner, I often mix more than I need and store the paint mixture in small plastic squeeze bottles. I have some that are well over a year old and still spray and work just fine. I usually add a couple of drops of GAC 200 to each ounce if that might make a difference. My best guess is that your premixed paint should be fine if stored in a tightly closed container but then, I never actually tried your mixture.

I just got a new large bottle of flat base so i'll use whats left in the old, small bottle & some Future and make a batch for the next kit and see how it holds up.  Sounds like it should be ok.

Thanks!

Yup, Tamiya xf22 flat + Future keeps quite well, as said, stir well before application & remember to CLEARLY MARK the different CONTENTS!
