working wih paint markers
Posted by Sapper22 on Monday, March 17, 2014 12:14 PM
I was curious to see their are other modelers who work with paint markers? I have a hard time painting smaller pieces with the standard airbrush & painting from the jar leaves the paint too thick? Also which paint markers work the best & what company sells them.

I just use a Sharpie 24 color set. I used to use more expensive Pigma markers, but after washes and weathering I couldn't see any difference between Sharpie and Pigma.

I like to use black majic markers for painting the black rubber tire on tank road wheels.          ACESES5                                    2 cents                          Smile Burger

One problem I've found with the black colors, especially Sharpies,  is they can turn a dark purple color.

I used one to fill in panel lines on an aircraft and had to repaint the entire aircraft.

I have found some great fine point marking pens with metallic colors- silver and gold.  They make quite narrow lines.  I find the dilute "highlighting" markers fine for coloring clear plastic with a transparent color, like tinted canopies and red tail lights or wing tip lights.

Oh yeah, Sharpies are my friend! Like Mitsdude says, though, they can turn a purplish color. I only use them for lenses, periscope sight blocks, sensors etc. for that reason. I just painted the radar warning sensors on my A-10 with a Sharpie. I guess if the purple gets too obnoxious I can go back and touch up with something else.

the black Sharpie Paint Pens don't turn purple like the Sharpie Markers do

the paint pens work the same way as the DecoColor pens work, just shake them so the piston mixes the paint, then draw in your detail as if you are using a marker

another helpful marker to have around is the SRX ColorSharp pens, those work the same as the Metallic Sharpie work
