Airbrushing lacquer clear coats -- how long are you waiting to dry?
Posted by dirkpitt77 on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 11:28 AM

I've recently  moved from the Dullcote rattle can back to airbrushing it, where I get more consistent results. For those of you who airbrush  your lacquer based clearcoats, how long are you letting it sit to dry? I'll need to mask over the top of it and spray a second layer of paint.

The reason I ask is that when I am airbrushing the dullcote it seems to almost dry on contact. You'll see the wet spot where you sprayed it, but as you move the brush, it dries behind you almost instantly. Is this really as good as it seems? Or should I give it a few hours just to be sure? Anybody got experience with this?

  Thanks!

  Chris

I don't use Testor's Dullcoat, but I use Gunze's lacquer clears from time to time. All gloss coats take longer to dry, 2 days or more. Flat coats take much less. With Gunze's lacquer flat, you can handle the model in an hour or so.

I ended up giving it 3-4 hours. Masked it off and sprayed the second layer and the paint didn't peel up, so I reckon the time was adequate. Thanks, Nathan!
