Material Looking Like A Road
Posted by Ceige on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 12:13 PM
Is there a material that has the appearance of a tar covered road after painting etc? I want to build the new Batman vehicle and display it on what appears to be a 2 lane road with stripes down the center but I'm at a loss as to what would give the best effect for it. Anyone have an idea what would be a good material to use? Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.

Maybe roofing felt, aka "tar-paper"?  Just a WAG though...Big Smile

That's a good idea.  You brought to mind using a shingle with small enough grit and be a large enough piece.  Tar paper? Maybe. "Thanks".

I would be interested to see/hear what you come up with for this.  I have been thinking of trying an old school 60s airstrip drag track diorama.  Sort of an illegal street racing scene I can drop period cars in for pics.

I have collected many reference pictures but haven't been able to find anyone who has done something like that.  I'm sure it's been done, it's not that original but I still can't find anyone who has detailed or made a tutorial of it.  Experimenting seems the route I'm gonna have to take.  I've never done a diorama before so a simple dusty tarmac is a good a place as any to start.

Also, just a thought.  The bat-mobile with LED street lights casting shadows all over it would look pretty awesome as a diorama.  You might even be able to rig up a bat symbol cast in light on the street or something slick like that.  There is a lot of potential for a batman dio.  Good luck and keep us posted.

Hello!

How about fine sandpaper painted over with oil paint or something like that? This also depends on the scale for which it's intended. Hope it helps, have a nice day

I like this idea.  The problem is finding a big enough piece.  This would be hard to trick out putting pieces together I believe. Thanks.  This has got me looking into a different direction.

Checked it out but, I'm looking for a fairly new road look.  This looks fine for a battle zone. Thanks for the reply.

I have used fine wet or dry sandpaper as a quick and easy road material for small scale.  In other cases I just use dark gray paint.  The actual color of asphalt-paved roads varies greatly with the local sands and gravels used, and the length of time since paving.  When freshly paved, the dark tar is very visible.  The more the road, taxiway, runway or whatever is in use, the more the asphalt is stripped off, making the sand and gravel more visible, lightening the color.
