Future and Flat Base
Posted by dcf on Friday, May 9, 2014 6:01 PM

I've been trying to use Future as a flat coat by mixing it with Tamiya flat base and isopropyl alcohol.  I mix the Future and alcohol about 70/30 then add the flat base and mix well.  The results aren't flat and I get white residue in areas of the model.

Anyone out there have any suggestions or am I missing something critical in the process?

Thanks.

I use Testors Dullcote straight from the rattle can. No muss, no fuss.

I keep hitting "escape", but I'm still here.

leave out the alcohol. try using less flat base. I dont use the mixure myself, but Duke Maddog on here swears by it (not at it) at IPMS and AMPS meetings

Oh yes, try posting this question in the painting airbrushing forum section. This area of the forum if for help with the forum itself.Wink

Like said, skip the alcohol - also make sure that the flat base is well mixed.

For some good info on Future, including flat base mixing ratios have a look here;

Add a small amount of cornstarch to any water base solution ,and it will leave a good final flat result. It also works w/enamels.

Seriously, cornstarch?

So, simply mixing some cornstarch into some plain Future will result in a perfect flat coat?

No need to take a chance with Future + flat base. There are several great acrylic matt varnishes. My favorites are W&N Galaria & Vallejo. They always work flawlessly.

Yes, but if you already have the product, why spend money on something else that duplicates that products role? Save that money for somewhere it can be better used. When hobby budgets tighten up, this is a prime consideration.

Well, I walked down to a nearby RC LHS becuae I wanted to try an acrylic flat coat in order to cut down some time on a project. Unfortunately they were out of the MM Acryl stuff, but they did have some Tamiya Flat Base. So I bought the stuff and am gonna give this stuff a try here and see how it works.

Well I tried it a little while ago. I can tell that it's gonna take some experimentation to get right.

Why use Tamiya Flat Base when you can use Tamiya Flat Clear XF-86?

Because the shop did not have any on hand. You get what you can, when you can.

I see. Next time you order online, buy some XF-86. It's become my favorite matte varnish.

I do not do much online ordering, and certainly not for paints. I have five hobby shops (2 scale models, 1 R/C, & 2 Railroad) , plus a Hobby Lobby all less than a 30 minute drive away. But I will keep my eye open for XF-86 at the shops. I am sure it is good stuff.
