Alclad question

Has anyone tried a different basecoat other than gloss black (like a dark red or blue) for Alclad? If so, how'd it turn out?

Which Alclad II?  If its one of the "regular shine" colors then it doesn't matter what color the base coat is.  The only time you need a gloss black base coat is when using the "high shine" colors.

And yes, you can use other colors besides gloss black to get really good paneling effects.  For example, you could put down a gloss black base coat and then mask off certain panels with flat black,  This will give you some dull aluminum panels.

Or you could paint some of those panels various shades of gloss grey to get some different tones while still getting the high shine look.

I think some have used the gloss reds and blues with pretty good results but I've never tried that myself.

Yes, I am working experiments on this currrently. It does make a difference.  The difference depends on how thin you apply the Alclad. I tried a gloss yellow to indicate a few magnesium alloyed panels without having to use a whole different Alclad and it seemed to work. I have also used Testors black chrome, a semi-gloss black under polished aluminum, and I could definitely see the yellow tint.

The heavier you apply alclad the less the effect of the undercoat.  But I like the effect from very thin coats, so I am okay with this.  I have a B-18 about to go on the bench, and I intend to go very wild on the undercoat, with many colors and sheens, to see what it will do.
