I *think* it means general purpose - ie, generic branded paint thinner.
However, if i'm wrong, please correct me before i lead somebody astray...
Chris

I must have missed these replies from Phil_H and Snibs - thanks for the tips.
Think i'll drop by Bunnings on my way home tonight.
I'm glad this thread has re-surfaced.
Never tried lacquer thinner for spraying Humbrol, give it a try on a bit of scrap, gp thinner is cheaper anyway.
Cheers.
Some stuff that might be interesting.

So can I use lacquer thinner to thin humbrol fro air brush use?
John
Yes the Diggers from Bunnings is fine, using it now, the gp Supercheap thinner is fine also. If your at Supercheap, there Regal spray putty works the same as Mr Surfacer 500, it acts smells and looks the same, thin it down to what you like for spraying.
Don't think it's been mentioned but you will need to thin Humbrol for brush painting as well and yes it brushes very well.
Mick.
cmlI can't get hold of either Humbrol or Testors thinner here, so I use Tamiya enamel thinner and that seems to work pretty well too.
Chris, next time you're at Bunnings, pick up a litre of White Spirits. Essentially the same stuff as Tamiya enamel thinners, but much cheaper. Approx $5.00 per litre, vs $14.00/250ml for the Tamiya branded stuff. (or $5.00-$6.00 for a 40ml jar from Tamiya... )
stikpusherplasticjunkie And they brush on very well too. Yes they do indeed!

Too many models to build, not enough time in a lifetime!!
I use Testors airbrush thinner in the red can for any enamels that I airbrush. That stuff works excellent. It tends to give enamel paints a little more tooth for grabbing on to plastic. I use generic thinner for clean up afterwards. Like was stated above, make sure your Humbrol paints are mixed thoroughly-preferably by stirring. But once you get them dialed in with your stirring and mix ratios I bet that you will become a die hard Humbrol fan like I am. Great stuff.
Never used it so can't comment on Testors thinner, the Humbrol thinner smells like metho and wont buy it again. If you have any gp thinner down the shed give it a try sometime and see what works best for you.
Snibs,
I used Testors enamel thinner as I could not find Humbrols thinner. My local hobby shop said I could use the Testors.
Stikpushers ratio's are spot on, what sort of thinner? I found Humbrols thinner is not as good as gp or enamel thinner for spraying. I do like most of Humbrols other products, don't know why they seem to be at the bottom of the list all the time, I'm sure there Clear is Future floor polish from what I read but I have never used Future so I don't know for sure. Don't forget to mix the paint VERY thoroughly.
Thank you,Stikpusher. This was my first attempt with humbol enamels.
Yes, unless your paint has thickened to a honeylike consistency in the tin, 1:1 is too much thinner. I usually work around a 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner ratio with Humbrols. Sometimes a 3:2 or 3:1 ratio depending upon the age of the paint.
I am painting my WWI Albatross with Humbol Matte Scarlet. I sprayed with a ratio of 1:1 @ 20 psi. I think I may have used too much thinner as it seems too opaque. Should I have changed the ratio or the psi? I am using a Pasche 2000H beginner model. I know paint is not an exact science but I think my ratio is wrong.
