Air tank size

I use a 0.5 gallon tank in conjunction with an Iwata Smart Jet compressor.  The compressor turns on a few times during a painting session of applying a base coat to a 1/35 AFV.  So I guess it's too small.  The Smart Jet isn't noisy at all, but I'd enjoy a really quiet painting session.  I'd like to enjoy applying a base coat or camo patterns to a single 1/35 AFV without having to hear the compressor.  Would 2 or 3 gallons be enough?

Hi Chrisk-k,

My Sparmax TC620X has a 2.5 L (0.66 Gal) tank and I'm not bothered by the times it turns on/off during a session - it is very quiet. A larger tank would: 1) reduce the number of cycles during a session but  (2) in your case, increase the time to fill the tank by 4X (2 gal) or 6X (3 gal) so it's a trade-off. Either shorter cycles or longer run times to fill the tank.  I opt for the shorter cycles because the pump doesn't get hot while filling the tank. Our little compressors don't pump huge volumes of air so there is a big trade-off. Your choice.

No, it is NOT a good idea to use larger than 0.5 gallon tank with the Smartjet. The Smartjet has a low power motor and goes only up to 35 psi (according to Iwata spec). If you want the tank of air to last longer, switch to the Powerjet or the Sparmax TC-620. The more powerful motors have pressure capability up to 70-80 psi.

The Smartjet will run too long and get too hot filling a larger tank.

My SmartJet shuts off at about 53psi and restarts at about 45.  It charges up my 5 gallon tank from 0psi in a little over 7 minutes and gets warm but not hot.  From 45 back to 53 takes slightly more than 2 minutes and barely warms it up.
