my 2nd DIY spray booth
Posted by mgh on Sunday, July 20, 2014 2:17 PM

My first spray booth was a plastic tub with 2 muffin fans.  It did OK, but a little too small, and I wanted a little better air flow.

Got the idea to built a box from here:

Being the cheapskate that I am, I did not want to spend the $230 (including shipping), and had read about using a marine blower for a fan, so thought I would give that a try.  So this is what I used.

I used OSB rather than plywood, as I am a horrible carpenter, and figured it would take me a couple of tries to get things to fit.  Plywood would definitely look a lot better.

If I were to do it again, I would probably not go as wide, and shorten it an inch.  Using the plans, but not ordering the parts that included the filter bracket/holder, I was an inch too tall to just slip in a 24X16 inch filter, so had to mess around to find a way to hold the filter securely in place.

The booth works extremely well, and I am mostly happy with it, but that blower is loud!  Can hardly hear the airbrush over the noise, but it does provide excellent air flow.

Looks good. Is the area behind the filter all open or is there a hole in there for a duct?

Behind the filter is enclosed, with a 4" hole for the ducting.

That is very similar to my present spray booth. I made mine out of particle board. Too heavy. Mine hangs on a pegboard wall.  It is a pain to take it down to change filters, so I would like to re-do it (actually complete remake) using thin plywood.  And, I will make it easier to change filters- it takes almost a half hour now, as I have screws and gaskets on panel that covers filters.  Also, I find after heavy use, the paint sometimes causes filter to stick to its mount, so I am trying to design a way to eliminate that.
