I often dry-brush rust colors, so I can fade it into painted areas.  Also, I often use two colors of rust, and dry brushing allows me to fade one color into the other.

That magazine looks like it'd be worth its weight in Gold!  All those sweet tecniques!

I'm no expert.  I made this a bit back.  Its supposed to be rust steel plates.  I used a flat rust in acrylic then a light rust wash in enamel (gently).  I then dry brushed a bit of steel (which would have been the color underneath the rust) in enamel.  Last I used a final dark flat thinned down wash to highlight some pitting also enamel (gently because if you are too aggressive you can wear through).  I did a lot of experimenting and random rubs/streaks and used some thinner here and there to wear through some areas.

Lots of experiments and washes and drybrushing.

It don't get any better than this.

This is a "magazine", not a book, that has been rereleased. That should tell you something.

This magazine usually covers land vehicles, not aircraft, but the techniques are close enough.

I'm guessing you better jump on this now before it too is gone.
