That's a bunch of red flags.  I wouldn't use any primer that wasn't specifically made for models, such as Testors/Model Master, Tamiya, Mr. Surfacer, etc.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

You may be putting it on too dry.  That sometimes causes the rough appearance.  Try a heavier coat.

As a rule of thumb , I always test on the sprue or a part of the underneath or inside that is not going to be seen . best to stand the can in a bowl of Hand hot water for ten minutes , Then spray a light coat on from about 10 inches away . return the can to the water have a cup of coffee and then re spray . I nearly always spray three coats  in the space of an hour . no splatters or grainy effects . best of luck  ian

Adding primer

Ordered a primer, just arrived this morning... It had one review who said that it was good for modeling. I just want to be sure... I ordered a grey "NOW" spray paint/primer... I don't see it saying anything about plastics (but it says "All purpose Grey Primer 21218?) it's a generic spray but I don't like using something that I know little about. Would any spray primer work? It does say to clean with lacquer thinner so I'm assuming it can be for enamel paints. Just practice sprayed with it (not on the hind) should it have a spattery look to it? Luckily it dries quick but it looks very grainy
