Grey primer on clear plastics
Posted by Cpt-Shmitt on Saturday, August 16, 2014 12:19 PM

The hind I have has side windows, which are incorperated into a small plate to simulate the interior walls, it is described as a small square piece of plastic (of which there are two, one for each side of the fuselage)  they are 3D panels where the outside windows are elevated to click into the half of the fuselage. It's supposed to be painted olive drab (with exception of the elevated windows) I have cover them with tape so as not to get paint on them... I have always had the problem of painting clear plastics because the paint would always be runny. So I am wondering if using spray primer would fix the problem of runny paint? I'm curious if anyone as other ways to paint clear plastics.

Never tried that,  but it sounds like it would work.  I would test on a piece of scrap clear plastic first… Good luck!

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

I have often used Krylon primer on clear plastic pieces where it would need to be masked off and painted.  Works fine.  Only hard part is that it often needs to be masked on both sides, especially in places like cockpits.  Getting the inside and outside masking in register can be challenging.

Once primed paint like normal.  Oh, and seal tape, as if there is any bleed-under, removing it will undoubtedly  dull or scratch transparent panel.  Use a good tape like Tamiya and seal with Glosscoat.
