vallejo paint problem

Every time I try to mix Vallejo paint with thinner it gets foamy. I have used the Testors  and Tamiya acrylic thinners and even plain water with the same result. What am I doing wrong?

Vallejo paints are a very unique formula. The typical acrylic thinners will not work. My first suggestion is to get some of Vallejo's own thinner and airbrush thinner. If that's too pricey or will take too long, my next suggestion is to use Windex. It works pretty well, but it will still separate after a while.

Also it depends on which Vallejo paint you're using. Vallejo Model Air don't need to be thinned from what I'm told.

Windex (or alcohol) + Vallejo = gunky mess.  It is a well-known fact.

Vallejo recommends either their thinner or water. I use their thinner only for spraying (both Model Air and Model Color) and just water (distilled) for brush painting with Model Color.

No expert by a long shot, but 18 solid months experience using Vallejo.

My personal experience trying Windex with Vallejo is that it sprays ok for a while, but created the gunky mess Chris refers to inside the airbrush. Maybe BarrettDuke has found something I've not.

I've not tried spraying Vallejo Model Color, as a lot of references I've seen suggest that its not a good idea.  I only use their thinning medium when trying to thin the paint for application.  When it comes to clean-up, I use a combination of Windex+hot tap water and it goes bye-bye very quickly.

I have successfully used Windex to thin Vallejo paint for airbrushing. I have never done it with more than a cupful at a time, so it may be that I didn't use it long enough for it to buildup in the AB chamber. I did state, however, that it tends to separate in the cup. I now use Vallejo's AB thinner when I spray their paint.
